Wedding Discos in Hertfordshire – Getting the disco and venue right.

I have provided many wedding discos for couples in Hertfordshire. If you have seen the other pages on my mobile disco blog then forgive me for repeating but you may be interested to know I have provided some reviews for the wedding discos in Hertfordshire that I have done.

It is important to get the disco going to consider the following points,

  • Venue Lighting
  • Location of the Disco and Bar
  • Numbers of Guests
  • Timings of Food
  • Timings of other entertainment, Fireworks, Lanterns, Speeches, Bands Etc

The lighting of the venue can have a positive or negative effect on the wedding disco atmosphere. I have done some wedding discos in Hertfordshire where the lighting cannot be dimmed suitably which does discourage people from dancing. People like to dance in the dark, or dimmed lighting.

The location of the disco will be a large factor. If you have a bar in another room or seating outside of the room with the dance floor it will be more difficult to get people onto the dance floor and out of their seats at key times such as the first dance. It is best to have some seating, but not too much in the main disco room. If you can get the bar in the main disco room also this helps as people generally congregate around this.

The number of guests is key to a good wedding disco. Too few and the night will be disjointed in terms of the flow of music as reacting to a handful of people compared to a room of dancers is completely different. A full room will mean a good rotation of dancers and a good flow as people do need to leave the dance floor to get drinks etc no matter how good the music is.

Timings of the wedding disco I can help with. It is good not to disrupt the main part of the event usually between 9:30pm and midnight. Often once the atmosphere has built on the dance floor it is the discos job to keep it there. If everyone leaves to see fireworks, or stops for a speech or food then this will often not recover quite as good as people have time to pause and their minds are then on other things. Booking a Wedding Disco in Hertfordshire

If you are looking to book a wedding disco in Hertfordshire I don’t envy the difficulties you may be having. I recently booked entertainment for my own wedding but was lucky that I know some people in the industry that could help me. I actually booked a wedding band as I feel I would be too critical of another DJ at my own wedding. However I digress, back to the point.

How do you book the right wedding disco in Hertfordshire?

I find with some clients the wedding disco is sometimes the last thing to be booked. You have booked the venue, the wedding photographer, flowers and then you think about the evenings entertainment. The budget can often be somewhat drained at this point and price is a factor. Why shouldn’t it be, no one wants to get ripped off. However make sure you consider that in most cases the wedding disco will be the single longest part to the day. The wedding itself is usually less than an hour, photo’s hour, wedding breakfast 2 – 3 hours and then the evening entertainment typically 7pm – Midnight is 5 hours. Your evening guests arrive having missed some of the days excitement and the first thing they see is an empty room with a lonely wedding DJ and a bar (until things hot up that is).  I say lonely wedding DJ because 9 times out of 10 no matter how hard you try the wedding breakfast over runs and the evening guests start arriving before you are finished.

So having now established the importance of the DJ to look professional for your evening guests first impressions, and the Wedding DJ having the largest time slot to entertain your guests, do you want to get it wrong? No!

What could go wrong?

  • Your wedding DJ lets you down at the last minute. (Worst nightmare and it happens, I have had phone calls from desperate best men on a Saturday afternoon trying to get a DJ last minute for that evening)
  • Your DJ turns up but not as you expected. The setup is too small, the Wedding DJ is not who you originally spoke to and doesn’t have the same experience.
  • The Wedding DJs equipment is not up to task and fails half way through the set leaving you without music.
  • Your DJ does not have an appropriate mix of music to suit all ages or your requirements and insists on playing hiphop all night. (Enjoyed by many but for a wedding more variety is generally required)

How to avoid booking the wrong DJ

  • Book someone who has experience in providing wedding discos, sounds obvious but some DJs are just better suited for 18th birthdays and not the best day of your life.
  • Ask about the wedding disco equipment, look for pictures, make sure you know how many people the setup is designed to cater for. Look for brand names, Pioneer, Technics, Peavey, Mackie, Martin, Abstract, ACME.
  • Ask about the music the wedding DJ will play. Ask if you can make requests in advance.
  • Ask about a back up plan. What if your wedding DJ can’t make it. What would they do?
  • Look for independent reviews. These days many websites offer a chance to review services. Not everyone wants to provide reviews especially when they are more than likely on honeymoon, but some do and it’s a good way of finding out what people thought.
  • Ask to talk to the DJ in advance. Some agencies will not offer this service as they won’t know until closer to the time which wedding DJ they are sending. This can lead to problems if the DJ does not have a clue about your requirements and arrives unprepared.
  • Don’t book the cheapest. You get what you pay for in life generally. leave cheap to 18th Birthdays not your wedding day!

Busy Times for Wedding Discos

Is it just me or is this wedding season getting busier? Year on year it seems that more and more people are turning to a disco to provide entertainment for thier wedding. It also looks as if the traditional Saturday wedding is now becoming something that can happen on any day of the week. I have quoted for weddings on everyday of the week this year. Maybe its a sign of people looking for better value out of a venue or maybe it’s just because the best venues are fully booked for weekends.

My suggestion would be to read my wedding venue disco reviews if you can’t decide on a venue and book well in advance if possible.

Halsey Masonic Hall Cheshunt – Birthday Disco

I recently provided a disco at Hasley Masonic Hall Cheshunt. I have played the venue before some time ago now. Here is my review.

Location– Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.
Travel Time –  45 minutes travel time.
Setup time – 1hr.
Space for full setup? – Yes,
Smoke Machine – Not on this ocassion but didn’t see smoke alarms
Lighting – Could be switched off or dimmed.
Noise / Sound Limiter – No
Layout – Bar in room just behind the Disco, Tables around edge of dance floor
Staff – Organised and Helpful.

Other Comments – The food looked well presented and smelt lovely although I didn’t have any.
